1. Danby Freestanding Wine Cooler Review! Verified Buyer – 1 August 2024

   I bought this Danby 36 bottle wine cellar to replace a Koolatron that recently stopped working. My previous wine cellar was a dual zone but half of the white wine section was empty so I decided to replace with a single zone cellar and just chill the white when drinking it. This is an extremely affordable unit. The packaging was done very well and the product arrived undamaged. I loaded it with bottles and then I let it sit for about 5 hrs (6 is recommended) before plugging it in. I had expected it to take a day to get to temperature but within a couple of hours I believe it had already gotten down to about 60 degrees. By morning, it was at temperature. Using a meat thermometer on the top shelf and bottom shelf reads a difference of about 10 degrees. When the top shelf was at 60, the bottom read 50. I would have preferred that the other way around as I have far fewer white wines and prefer pinot noir and would rather have it a bit colder at the top and warmer at the bottom where the half shelves are located. However, if you are storing champagne, this may be ideal. After letting the unit sit for a few days at the set temp, I got the reading in my attached photos — top shelf: 58, bottom shelf: 55. This is at or near the warmest setting. When I had it set somewhere near the middle, the bottom shelf was getting to about 47 degrees. The unit runs much more quietly than my Koolatron and I would describe it as “quiet”. It appears and feels solidly built with good seals on the door, door movement works well, sturdy rubber coated shelves, and a moveable hinge for the door. For those that have owned a wine cellar, you will understand the number of bottles is based on the standard sized bottle. This will fit 5 standard sized bottles on each shelf. The larger bottles such as the cabernet Educated Guess is a bit larger and will only fit 4 unless you want an extremely tight fit. Even then, you will want to mix and match. The pinot noir bottle will only fit 4 across but placing top to bottom will get 3 across on each of the smaller shelves at the bottom. I currently have 34 bottles including 6 pinot noir and 2 bottles of port. For me, this was expected and I was actually impressed I did not have to put bottles in like puzzle pieces to get them to fit. In the photo with the 3 bottles… For the Grape Creek size bottle (far left), you will be able to get 36 bottles. The White Oak and La Crema (Pinot Noir) will only fit 4 on a shelf. You may be able to work those bottles in with others. You can see the second shelf from the bottom in one of my photos with 4 of the White Oak sized bottles. You can fit 6 Pinot sized bottles in the bottom. This unit runs fairly cold. If you are interested in storing your wine at 60+ degrees, this is probably not the unit for you. Based on the price, size, and capacity, I decided to compromise and let the reds breathe for a few as the warm to temp and I will put the whites in the refrigerator for a few before drinking. One disappointment is that the light is not a pressure switch but is a toggle instead. There is no switch on the outside of the unit. This means that not only must you open the door to turn on the light, you also have to toggle it on. You then have to toggle it off when finished. This makes it difficult to look through the door at the contents and if you aren’t using bottle tags, you may find yourself standing with the refrigerator door open while you look for what you want. However, the light is a nice shade of blue. Pros: Extremely competitive price Solidly built Compressor Moveable hinge on door Capacity is relatively accurate Cons: Cannot set exact temperature. Dial is used instead. Must use a thermometer to measure temperature. Must open the door and press switch for light. Coldest at the bottom. Not so great for pinot noir. About a 5-10 degree difference from top shelf to bottom shelf.

   Nothing really to set-up…just unpack … and plug in. Temperature appears to remain stable. Should purchase a temp gauge and place inside to monitor. Cooler maintains the 48 F…the control knob does not help without a temp gauge. The blue light adds to the ambiance and does not heat inside the cooler. Worth the price for a 36-bottle (depends on the size of the bottles) wine cooler. Appears just like its photo.
